Australian Electoral Commission

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) runs the Indigenous Electoral Participation Program (IEPP) as part of the Government's 'Closing the Gap' initiative.

Indigenous Australians experience a low rate of enrolment and participation in voting, and a high rate of voting informally. IEPP is a multi-faceted national program operating Australia wide in remote, rural and urban areas which seeks to close the gap through meaningful participation in Australia's electoral and democratic processes.

The AEC currently employs 25 Field Officers, the majority of whom are Indigenous Australians, who visit a range of communities and organisations to increase Indigenous engagement with the electoral process.
