Murri advocate condemns six-month wait for Newstart

A Murri sovereignty and rights campaigner has slammed proposed changes to youth income assistance.

The changes include extending the waiting period to six months for an unemployed person under 30 to access Newstart Allowance.

A report released last week by a Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights found the proposed changes breach international human rights laws.

Birri-Gubba man and Chair of community services organisation Murri Watch, Sam Watson, says the proposal is disgraceful and denies youth assistance at a time they need it.
